What is it Covid-19?
COVID-19, also known as coronavirus disease 2019, is caused by a virus called SARS-CoV-2, which stands for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. It is highly contagious and spreads rapidly most commonly through the air in tiny droplets of fluid between people in close contact
Symptoms
Symptoms of COVID-19 often resemble those of a common cold, flu, or pneumonia, primarily affecting the respiratory system. Symptoms can include dry cough, shortness of breath, extreme tiredness, digestive symptoms, headache, body aches, fever or chills.
While most individuals experience mild symptoms, some may become severely ill or develop post Covid-19 conditions called “Long COVID”
Prevalence
In the 2023-24 season, the overall rate of Covid-19 associated hospitalizations was 144.5 per 100,000 people. In the United Stated over one million people have died from COVID-19!
Who is it recommended for?
Per CDC recommendations:
- Everyone 6 months and older should get an updated COVID-19 vaccine.
- If you are aged 6 months-64 years, you may receive 1 additional dose of an updated 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine at least 2 months after your last recommended updated dose.
- People aged 65 years and older who received 1 dose of any updated COVID-19 vaccine (Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech or Novavax) should receive 1 additional dose of an updated COVID-19 vaccine at least 4 months after the previous updated dose
In addition, certain factors could be reasons to get a vaccine sooner rather than later, such as:
- personal risk of severe disease
- risk of disease in a loved one or close contact
- local COVID-19 hospital admission levels
- and the most common covid-19 variant currently causing illness.
