What is it?
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It is a sexually transmitted disease which affects the immune system and can potentially cause an infected person to be easily prone to infections and certain types of cancer.
AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is a result of HIV infection, usually 6-9 years after initial infection. There are two types, HIV-1 and HIV-2. Usually, HIV in the United States is HIV-1.
Who is at risk?
HIV can be transmitted by blood, blood products, sexual fluids, and breast milk. Most people are infected by sexual contact, birth to an infected mother, during breastfeeding, or from sharing contaminated needles and syringes. The virus is more likely to be transmitted with men to men intercourse than with heterosexual transmission.
What are the signs and symptoms of HIV?
It is possible that in the first stages of HIV, no signs or symptoms will be apparent.
Later, signs and symptoms may include:
- Enlarged lymph nodes
- Weight loss
- Chronic diarrhea for more than 1 month
- Fever for more than 1 month
- Bacterial infections such as Tuberculosis
- Other unusual illnesses and cancers
Testing
Anyone who is concerned about HIV exposure should be tested. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently recommended that everyone between the ages of 13-64 be tested at least once. Persons who have a new sexual partner, multiple sexual partners, or other high-risk behavior should be tested yearly for HIV. Testing is done by a simple blood test and is important to prevent the spread of HIV to others. e7 Health has three types of HIV tests:
- Instant HIV test. This test has the benefit of knowing negative results in 20 minutes. The sample can be taken from a single finger stick or blood test. It is used to detect antibodies and antigens to HIV-1 and HIV-2. e7 Health offers a third-generation rapid HIV test that can detect HIV 1 and 2 antibodies 3 weeks to 12 weeks from the time of exposure. If test results are indeterminate, we will send a sample to the laboratory for confirmation testing at no additional cost. Results for this test are available in 15 minutes.
- HIV Antigen/Antibodies test. This Fourth-generation test looks for both HIV antibodies and antigens. If you are infected with HIV, an antigen called p24 is produced even before antibodies develop. This test can detect HIV 2 to 6 weeks from the time of exposure. This is called the window period. If your test results are negative during the window period, you should be retested 3 months after your possible exposure. The results of the HIV Antigen/Antibodies test are usually available within 2-3 business days.
- Aptima HIV test (Early detection HIV). This test is approved for the early diagnosis of HIV-1 infection. It can detect HIV in a 9-11 day "window period" or after. This test is more costly than the HIV antibody test. The results are usually available in 3-5 business days.
Other types of tests include HIV PCR testing. This test is recommended for patients who are already diagnosed as HIV positive as a way to test Viral Load and manage treatment. Previous testing methods of Elisa and Western Blot methodology are no longer part of the CDC HIV testing recommendations. This is because newer and more accurate testing is now available, such as the 4th generation test described above.
Treatment
There are treatment options for people infected with HIV that can help to have a normal and long life, although there is not yet a cure. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is the current recommended treatment for HIV. This involves taking a regimen of medications daily and helps the body fight off life-threatening infections and cancer. This treatment is usually prescribed and monitored by a specialist in HIV or Infectious Diseases.
It is important for HIV infected individuals to have vaccinations against vaccine-preventable diseases because of being more prone to those illnesses. e7 Health offers all vaccines available in the USA.
Things you should do to prevent transmitting HIV to others include:
- The only sure way is to abstain from sex
- Correct and consistent use of latex condoms can reduce the risk for transmission; however is not 100% effective
- Use protection during oral sex such as condom or dental dam
- Tell others you have HIV such as people you have had sex with or are planning to have sex with
- Don’t share needles, donate blood or plasma, share razors, or share sex toys
